Have you ever wondered how picture books are made? Would you like to know how illustrator’s create the funny, colourful, fabulous illustrations and artwork that your children love so much?  Well this is your chance to deep dive into the world of children’s book illustration.

Each tour will start at Paper Bird Books, Fremantle’s delightful bookshop for the young and young at heart. From Paper Bird our Crawl tour guide will transport you to your next destination, a private artist’s studio, before moving on to your third stop, the Literature Centre.

Tour groups will then return to Paper Bird Books. Before you leave the tour you will also be treated to complimentary coffee and cake in the adjacent Moore & Moore Café (tour #1) or a complimentary glass of wine at a nearby wine bar (tours # 2 & 3).

Each tour is limited to a maximum of 10 people so don’t miss out.

  • James Foley makes children’s books for children who read books. If you’re a child and you’re eating his books, you’re doing it wrong.
  • Liliana Stafford is a multimedia artist and an illustrator of twelve books for children. She has won the Hoffman Award and been shortlisted for the WA Premier’s Award and the Environment Award.
  • Michael Speechley likes to draw and write for kids. Sometimes he even teaches them as well. His books have been recognised by the Children’s Book Council and in the WA Premier’s Book Awards.
  • Frané Lessac is an author and illustrator, having created beautiful illustrations for more than fifty books. Travelling is a major source of inspiration for her work.
  • Wendy Binks is a well-known artist and author whose quirky and distinctive range of Australian animal designs is popular worldwide. She is best known for ‘Stripey’, her ’emu with attitude’.
  • Aśka (pronounced Ashka) is a visual storyteller, comic maker and a science communicator who is a passionate advocate of visual literacy. She has collaborated on picture books, middle grade titles, comics and graphic novels.

Studio Crawl tours are co-presented by Writing WA and the City of Fremantle in association with Paper Bird Books and the Literature Centre.
