York is situated on the Avon River, approximately 96km east of Perth, on the traditional land of the Ballardong Noongar people.
The town has the distinction of being the oldest inland town in Western Australia and this is reflected in the heritage architecture that survives today. York was also the last supply point for prospectors heading further inland to Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie during the 1880’s goldrush and the town prospered as a result. York Town Hall, built in 1911, is a reminder of this period of wealth.
