“The Mermaid Shell” 2024 Fictional Flashbacks! Shortlist

The air at Floreat felt heavy, as the waves licked the shore, scattering shells carelessly across the beach. We had collected more than enough, when Ella handed me another.

‘Mermaid shell,’ she said.

‘Aha,’ I replied absently, turning it over, inspecting its intricate, green patterns and shiny surface.

That night, as the rain fell heavy, I dreamed a sweet serenade in foreign tongues I strangely understood. I woke to find my daughter in my arms, the shell resting between our chests. We didn’t speak, drove to Floreat and waded into the foamy sea, returning the shell to its ocean home.
